Satyen Ghosal

Born in Patna, Bihar in 1921, Satyen Ghosal graduated from the Government College of Arts and Crafts, Calcutta in 1943 (Diploma Fine Arts) and obtained a post-graduate diploma as art teacher from the same college in 1945. He also studied at the Slade School of Art, London, 1955. First solo exhibition New York 1948, also London 1954, Tokyo 1966. Participated in numerous art exhibitions in India and abroad. Won First Prize, Inter-Asian Art Exhibition, Tokyo, Manila, Hong Kong and Bangkok (1965). Principal of the Government College of Arts and Crafts, Calcutta 1973-79. Also Vice-President AIFACS Council 1968-69. Member of the University Council, Rabindra Bharati University, Calcutta 1979-86, and member Artists Committee, Lok Sabha Secretariat.

Commissions: Painting for the Rashtrapati Bhawan of the first Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru, taking his oath during the transfer of power in 1947. Portraits of the Presidents and Prime Ministers of India. Satyen Ghosal established his reputation over four decades ago as one of India’s leading landscape artists. Later, Ghosal sought to paint Nature in Meditation, a series of paintings capturing nature’s creative energy in compositions wrought in deep musing, delicate perceptions of nature universalised into musical notations. His paintings are highly acclaimed both nationally and internationally, and his work is represented in the collections of the National Gallery of Modern Art and the Lali Kala Akademi in New Delhi.
