Prakash Karmakar

Artist Prakash Karmakar was born in 1934 in Kolkata. . By 1949, both his parents had passed away, forcing him to abandon his studies at the Government College of Arts and Crafts, Kolkata. He joined the army for two years and then quit to work as a graphic design manager for a medical firm in Kolkata. The artist went on to form a group called the Society of Contemporary Artists in 1962, Karmarkar received a French Fellowship and he left to study in Paris. Prakash Karmakar is the winner of many awards; the Lalit Kala Academy National Award, Rabindra Bharati Award & many more. He has had several solo exhibitions in Kolkata, Paris, Switzerland, Holland, Germany & Delhi. Many Group exhibitions have been held in Dilip Dasgupta’s Studio in Kolkata, amongst other places. His Collections are in Modern Art Gallery, New Delhi; Lalit Kala Academy, New Delhi; Tata Institute of Arts etc.
